THANK YOU! My cousin is a graphic designer and she is GOOD at what she does. She went to the Art Institute of Los Angeles and her talent is limitless. I pay her FULL PRICE for all the work she does for me. She has been with me since the beginning. I have referred her out to so many people and they say she is too expensive. Come on people! Why do you want a copy of what someone else has? Don't you want unique? Don't you want to stand out? My logo is MINE! No one has the same thing, but with different colors. Everyone KNOWS my logo! They see my site/blog/back of my car and know that it's me! If you want to last in this business, take it seriously. You want to be known as a professional, then work with professionals also!

Funny thing! I've asked multipul people (both friends and non) to look at my website and see what I could add. I have purposely left out my location to see if others would notice and I have YET for anyone to say "you don't say where you are located" haha! Great story.

The account you mention to collect sales tax etc is called a vendor's license in Ohio. Other states vary.

Insurance is not a LEGAL requirement. I have articles on this site elsewhere about the importance of insurance.

What about insurance? In Mass. we don't have a vedors lic. but you do need to set up an account with the state to submit sales tax that you collect, and to be exempt from sales tax on product purchase to resell.

It is easy enough to say no cameras while posing formals, and no other pro photogs. But how do you keep guests from taking photos? I really don't think you can or need to. A professional photo should be so much better than an amateur that it is apparent. I don't even consider weddings for a variety of reasons and dealing with this is one of them. I have little patients for rude ignorance.

Yay, I've been doing something right! I have a contact section on my website (easily found along the top of all of my pages), where customers can not only email me directly from the page, but it also has our street address, phone number as well as a link to our online booking system.

Hi Christine, I have pointed this out hundreds of times for photographers that have asked me to look at their marketing efforts. Can you imagine getting an envelope with an invitation to a free session and no indication of where. You call the place and they schedule the appointment. You live in OHIO and they say, great we will see you tomorrow at 10am here at our studio in LA California. This IS the biggest fall down of photographer web sites. You wouldn't do it with a mailer, why do you do it with your web site. Good call.

Thank god for bullies like you Christine. I will surely take the safer approach to posing babies, after having read your articles! I couldn't believe anyone would put newborns in a dangerous situation like the jar. I did think that actually hanging them in a cocoon might be safe, but not now.

I loves me some Zack! (He's my photog crush… LOL) And can I add…. If you use his method, you CAN use white bedsheets for your high key and no one will be the wiser. (Sorry Christine, had to add that! LOL) But I will admit after having purchased some white seamless this summer, it's a whole lot nicer to work with.

Guilty. I feel really bad about it too. It was before I knew better a few years back. Though I stayed out of the way and did not interfere with the hired photographers setups, or say "look over here". I stayed in the background just taking pictures for myself. Not to show anyone there or offer them to anyone. I did send them to the bride, because she was a good friend. I will NEVER, EVER, EVER do it again.
I got paid back with it though when I was shooting a wedding as the hired photographer and the "family" photographer followed me around the whole day. Side by side basically. I was so tempted to just pack up and go home. From now on it will be in my contract that brides sign that I will be the sole photographer.

If the skill level is only at the bed sheet stage, then getting white seamless paper is going to be useless. They will have no clue why it come out grey in their photo. It will be highly unlikely they will have the proper lighting and know how to overexpose the paper for white. So if they are going to have an ugly background anyway, it might as well be a wrinkled bed sheet.

Coming from a small town, seeing business owners putting their families first is nothing new or out of the ordinary – for many occupations. I used to work in an office where the owner's kids were there every day after school. It just wasn't a big deal. People have families – clients have families – it's not some big secret we need to hide or be ashamed of.
