It drives me absolutely crazy when I see a photo like this:

Seriously, how HARD is it to change the color of the blocks so that they look nice? Don’t give me the blah blah about not knowing how to do it. The Photoshop technique for this is REALLY simple. Much more simple than the skills required to take care of skin smoothing and stretch marks.

And if you don’t know how to take care of stretch marks on a maternity client, you should NOT be shooting for pay at all. Mkay?

HERE is what I’d rather see:

THIS is MUCH better! It looks great AND your maternity clients will be SO grateful!

Here are the step by step directions on how to achieve this. I don’t usually post tutorials on this site, but the crazy block colors are driving me nuts, so I’m going to pass on some helping hints to ease my suffering.

1. Duplicate the background layer. You know you should always do that, right? You’re inviting trouble by making edits to the original layer. Always make your edits on a duplicate layer.

2. Using your selection tool of choice (I used the “magic wand” tool) select the colors on ALL of the blocks. Hold down the shift button while you do this so that you can select multiple areas. If one of the blocks is already the color you want, select it anyway – you want ALL of your blocks to be the same exact color and this is the only way to assure that you can do it.

3. After you have selected the colors you wish to change and those areas are surrounded by the “marching ants”, do a copy and paste maneuver to create a new layer. This will be JUST the colored areas you wish to change.

4. Select your new layer and then go to the blending options area and choose “color overlay”. Then choose the color you wish the blocks to be and finalize it.

There, all done.

What? Where are the screen captures ? Oh, hello! I’m not here to hold your hand. If none of the above directions make sense and you need further instruction, that means that you don’t know Photoshop well enough to be using it and if you don’t know PS well enough to retouch your client photos – YOU SHOULD NOT BE CHARGING MONEY. OK?

If you think you do know what you’re doing and I’m just being mean – then utilize the “help” section in PS and you will find the instructions you need.

In the beginning, the camera gods created the kit lens. And it was good. Kind of.

But soon, heretics began worshipping at the feet of the kit lens and its goodness and proclaimed its glory throughout the Kingdom of Photographic.

The prophets confronted the existence of the kit lens and smote them. The heretics saw the sin in which they had become immersed and turned their backs on the kit lens and looked to the prophets for guidance in replacing their current lenses of worship.

The prophets decried the existence of the kit lens and proclaimed the glory of the “fast” lenses. The heretics repented and rushed to find altars of f/1.2 at which to worship.

And all was good. For awhile.

But soon, the prophets saw that the heretics were abusing the lenses at the altars of f/1.2. The goodness and glory of the creation of the 1.2 lens had been desecrated by the heretics.

Gone were the crisp focus of points of interest. Portraits of little sweet little children no longer had both eyes in focus and sometimes not even one was crisp. Instead, the the 1.2 lens was being used to focus on hair, or ears, or teeth, or noses. Or nothing at all.

The prophets wept and beat their fists loudly upon their breasts. (ouch!)

They were saddened and tried to lead the heretics back into the proper worship of the 1.2 lens, but no one listened. And the creation of out of focus portraits continued. And it was not good.

The Kingdom of Photographic soon lost some of its power and glory. The heretics became false prophets of the 1.2 lens and soon there were more false prophets than teachers and elders in the churches in the Kingdom of Photographic.

And thus the 11th commandment was borne:

Thou shalt not purchase a “fast” lens before learning the prayers of Depth of Field and mastering the lessons of Aperture and Focus.

Have you ever heard this? If not, it’s CB-speak for “What’s your location?”

I’d like you to go to your website and pretend that you are not you. Pretend you are a potential client. Pretend you want to know what city your photography business is located in.

Look. Keep Looking. Look some more.

Did you find it?

I didn’t think so.

This is one of the biggest falldowns I see when looking at photographer websites. More often than not, there is NO indication as to the geographic location of the photographer.

Do yourselves and your clients a favor and update your website immediately.

Have a nice weekend!

Copyright Zack Arias | www.zarias.com

So… remember my little rant about shooting on white bedsheets? If you don’t remember it, CLICK HERE and read, I’ll wait.

Recently, a Wootness reader commented on that article:

If the skill level is only at the bed sheet stage, then getting white seamless paper is going to be useless. They will have no clue why it come out grey in their photo. It will be highly unlikely they will have the proper lighting and know how to overexpose the paper for white. So if they are going to have an ugly background anyway, it might as well be a wrinkled bed sheet.

Well, that may be true, but I think a little education is in order. Frankly, I’m tired of seeing the bedsheets (and the not-so-good high key). Now I can certainly sit down and write a tutorial on high key photography, but it’s already been done. And very well, I might add. There’s no reason to re-invent the wheel.

Let me introduce you to Zack Arias. You may have heard of him. He’s a photographer that’s been elevated to “Rockstar” status, although don’t confuse him with the Rockstars I wrote about HERE, this man is deserving of his reputation.

He just happens to be the author of an exceptionally well-written tutorial on high-key. It’s the method that I use. So – check it out – practice and get off the list of people we’ll just leave alone about the bedsheets, okay?

ZACK ARIAS HIGH KEY TUTORIAL

Please note that there are 5 parts to this tutorial.

Read through them all and follow them step by step. The secret ingredient in this tutorial is the use of the cutters/flags. THIS ALONE will make a marked improvement in your high hey lighting if you feel you already have a handle on it – so pick that up as an extra technique – it really controls the light flying around in front of the client that is overspill from the background.

You’re welcome.

*****

Congrats on three whole years as a professional photographer! I’m sure in the beginning the road was a little rocky. At wootness.net, we talk about mistakes that new photographers make and how to avoid them. So, what was a mistake that you made that you wish you had done differently that might help out our readers?

One of my biggest mistakes was not paying enough attention to how I looked. I actually thought it was okay to wear comfortable clothes and shoes. I didn’t even wear a HAT! Gosh, what was I thinking? I know…I wasn’t! I learned fast that what you wear is every bit as important as your photography. Accessory Knuckles!

You seem like a very devoted wife and mommy. How much of a part of your business does your husband and children play in the business? Are they models for your website? Do they come with you on shoots?

My old website was actually filled with pictures of my precious, precious children. I think that clients are really interested in our day-to-day lives, so I fill it with photos of my family, my dog, what I make for dinner, vacations pictures, etc… It all helps me be more relatable. Is that a word? Dang…I sure hope so.

You say you are a lifestyle photographer. What do you do when YOUR lifestyle vision/style does not match the lifestyle of your client? I mean really, what do you do if they live in a trailer park and there’s just not a THING about where they live or what they wear that’s condusive to good photos? You talk about taking photos that are REAL, but what if they just kind of look, well, you know…real TRASHY?

As a natural light Lifestyle photographer, I feel that there is beauty all around us-we simply have to open our eyes. Am I right? You know I’m right. For instance, you might see a graffiti covered dumpster; I see the perfect backdrop for a maternity session. See where I’m going with this? It’s all about being REAL. I think people really appreciate that.

Is there ever a time when you have turned down a session or referred it to another photographer? Why?

Yes, I have had to refer sessions to another photographer. I stop shooting in December EARLY. There is so much to do, from decorating to school events to baking that I simply make my Christmas cut-off right after Thanksgiving. Family comes first and if “other” photographers prefer to keep their doors open right up until Christmas rather than spend time with their precious families, then that’s a choice they have to make. I’m not judgin’; I’m just sayin.’

What’s your favorite lens and why?

People ask me all the time about lenses. Please. Whatever comes in the box with your DSLR kit is just fine.

What’s the worst photography purchase you ever made? Why?

I am almost too embarrassed to say this, but I am going to anyway in the hopes that other people learn from my mistake. I had a girlfriend tell me about this new “look” called “Hi-Kee.” I think it’s Japanese. Anyway, it involves white paper on a roll. What a nightmare. I tried to set it up in my garage but I couldn’t get it to stick to the wall and then after I duck-taped the heck out of it, the paper ended up looking gray in the pictures. Maybe there’s some special “Hi-Kee” flash you can buy. I’m not really sure. My advice…don’t do it. Trust me on this.

What’s the best photography purchase you ever made? Why?

My best photography purchase was my camera bag. It has deep pockets for my scarves, lip gloss and water bottles. Isn’t that The Best?

Since you’ve been in business for 3 whole years, have you started mentoring or teaching workshops or selling templates? If not, do you think this is something you might be interested in?

After 3 years as a professional, I just felt it was my turn to give back. I haven’t spoken yet, but I have a workshop actually lined up. It involves Costco Party Platters and Fairy Godmother Wands (my favorite Photoshop Elements tool) for everyone! I’m not going to say it would be the best workshop ever…but it kind of would be.

What’s your favorite actions?

My favorite action is “Pop and Brighten.” I Pop and Brighten the heck out of everything!

What photography-related item was on your Christmas wish-list?

My belt buckle camera strap broke while I was filming footage for an upcoming video on Lifestyle Children Sessions, which kind of bummed me out. I’m hoping to replace it with something even more amazing, but I don’t know if that’s possible. I’m always open for glitter.

Are there any photographers that inspire you? Who and why?

Anne Geddes. I mean, it takes a special kind of photographic brilliance to think, “Hey, there’s a big flower pot…and there’s a baby. What if I combined them?” Pure Genius.

Do you have a favorite quote? What is it?

“(P) is for Professional.” I think that kind of sums up my entire professional photography philosophy.

I see where you mention you are putting together a website. Have you found a cool template you’d like to recommend? Or a designer? Or are you doing it yourself (that’s so HARD!!) ?

Putting together my new website is harder than calibrating my monitor! Sheesh! I don’t know how many bottles of Tylenol and Margarita mix I’ve gone through already.

What is your favorite Wootness article?

Silly girl… EVERY article on Wootness is my favorite!

*****

MWAC…we say it and we sneer. We jeer when Missy pronounces it the way she does and we roll our eyes when someone says they’re proud to be one.

MWAC, DWAC, GWAC…they all mean the same…someone with a camera.

We scoff and pronounce ourselves professional photographers and move on.

But maybe, just maybe these chicks have it figured out. In a way. The technical crap churned out by newbies – not figured out – no way – no how – but just maybe they have some other things figured out that we haven’t been paying attention to.

I’ve been fairly absent over the last few weeks. I’ve been doing my end-of-the-year analysis for the business, some studio cleanout & reorganization as well as just spending a lot of time with my family. I even did a mini-remodel in our kitchen.

It’s been a long time since I took a break. I finally stopped trying to fit photography in with all my other activities. I had hit burn-out. I stopped letting it take priority over my family and home. I started to think. And started to ask myself some tough questions.

When is the last time I referred to myself as anything other than a photographer?

When did being a photographer become my identity instead of my occupation?

When was the last time that I put “work” on the back burner to enjoy life?

You see where I’m going with this?

For a long time I looked at the MWACs and rolled my eyes whenever they had their children in the studio with them or had a baby strapped to the front of them while shooting a wedding or were vocal about needing to schedule sessions around children nap times. I still think this is an extreme and would not make them practices of my own, but I guess I’m going to have to give them some credit for trying to maintain a better family/work balance than I have been.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. it’s not work, it’s a passion. Whatever. It doesn’t matter what you call it or how much you enjoy it, it’s still work.

I’m going to be giving this a lot of thought as I revamp some things for the new year. How about you?

Yeah yeah yeah. I’m supposed to be all optimistic and think positively about the new year. Screw that. All I can say is “so long, good riddance.” 2011 frankly, sucked. For a lot of reasons.

Business-wise, it was a toss-up. Business was down, but I’m in tune with the reasons why.

On a personal level, though, I could have done without the year.

So, here’s to re-grouping and moving forward. 2012 -the pressure is on!

I’m working on a couple of ideas – this is the first one. There’s an area for each day of the week so that you can drag your files into the proper area. This works great for people who have daily to-do lists. I’ll be working on some different variations that are task-related.

This is 1920pixels x 1200 pixels and should fit most screens.

If you’ve never used these before, go to the area where you can control your desktop display and choose this image as your screen background – easy peasey!

Feedback welcome – I’ll be tweaking these as I go.

Be warned that this is a line of personal thinking that led to mini-epiphany about my business, so hang in there – I do have a point.

Let’s talk about fashion. Me? Fashion? [pause for laughter]

Let’s just say that once upon a time, my friend Karen admitted to being tempted to submitting my name to some show called “What Not to Wear.”

I’m not that bad, any more, but I’m no fashionista by a long shot.

But, I used to be. Not exactly a fashionista, but I worked a full time job and did the whole power-suit and heels thing. I was never one for makeup, but I was young and really didn’t need it.

But, the mid-thirties hit, I got a transfer to a different department where the dress code was relaxed, yada yada yada. But the truth is, I gained weight. And “cute clothes” became something I no longer felt comfortable wearing. So enter FrumpyWear – your answer to hiding those extra bulges with floppy and loose clothing.

No one was fooled.

Right now, I’m digging the jeggings thing – but because I have scads of embroidered studio dress shirts that I ordered WAY too large. They’re like a dress on me. SO, big shirt plus jeggings plus cool black boots with buckles on them = a look that covers stuff up, yet looks a little fashionable. I’m digging it. I think it looks cute. I get lots of compliments on the boots, anyway, so I’ll take it.

I haven’t asked my husband how he thinks it looks because I know he will tell me he thinks I should put on a belt. He is okay with the pounds I’ve put on since I met him – and to be honest – when I met him I was probably 10 pounds under what I should have been. So yeah, in the grand scheme of things, I don’t have a LOT of weight to lose, but for some reason, over the past 10 years or so, I’ve “let myself go.”

*GASP*

I would *SO* put on a belt – if I was skinny.

So, I was musing these thoughts when I was getting dressed this morning (burgundy shirt/denimn jeggings), and I really started to wonder what the hell was wrong with me that I had not made the effort to trim down those pounds. I could stand to lose 35 pounds. That is usually the goal every time I try to lose weight. And generally, I’ll get down 10 pounds or so before I fall off the wagon and never get back on, Then I gain it back.

Once I got to 6 pounds above my goal weight. I was looking and felt great. I was in the middle of a three week run of a stage performance of “Jerry’s Girls.” I think I had 13 costume changes over 2 hours and most of them were slinky and clingy dresses. The sequined kind. With my top secret body-shaper underneath, I was looking pretty good. And then the show ended and I could enjoy food. And I did. Until I had gained it all back.

That was 6 years ago. And now I’m just older. So – what the heck? Seriously? This is what it’s going to be – frumpy your way into old-lady-hood?

I don’t think so.

So – ya’ll have probably figured out I’ll be going on a diet. Yes, but that’s not the point.

I started thinking about my business and whether or not it’s wearing baggy clothes.

Yes, seriously.

For a long time, my office was out of control. Whenever I had a session, I would close my office door because it was right next to the client bathroom and I didn’t want any clients to see the horrid mess on their way to the bathroom. Like a baggy shirt thrown on over the bulges, I was covering up my mess by closing the door.

I could deal with the fat, but I didn’t want anyone else to see it.

Wow.

So, I’ve been on a major reorganizing kick, in my office, studio and home. I completeley emptied out and reorganized the office. I’m revamping policies and procedures, pricelists, packages and any other thing you can think of. I’m paying attention to branding.

It’s time to shape it up and get rid of the excess flab. I’ve made a pile of items on one side of my studio that I am either giving away or selling. I have some gear that I have not used in ages and I gave away a coffee table that looked good, but just was too large for the space it was in. My studio was starting to look too messy for my OCD tendencies and it was no longer a space I was proud of.

We’re streamlining over here. I’m getting rid of the excess and straightening up what’s left.

Sounds like diet and exercise, huh?

I’d like to challenge all of you to do the same. Start wearing belts. Figuratively, that is. Straighten up what you’ve already got. Start looking-good, both in your physical care and in your surroundings. Ger rid of the frumpy clothes.

I’m revamping the client waiting area of my studio to look more high end. I’m removing anything unframed and staying with the luxury framed items I already have. I’m removing anything from a vendor that they may be able to access and displaying only items available to pro photographers.

Then, I challenge you all to go on a diet. Again, figuratively. Is your filing system a bunch of papers thrown into a box? That’s not healthy (for your business). Get some things straightened up. Get caught up on entering your receipts into Quickbooks. Get better about recording your mileage. Put together an archive system and get a back-up system in place.

We can all improve, just like darn near everyone struggles with 10 pounds.

So – put on a belt and lose some weight!

I assume your grown woman and there are more productive ways to get your point or concern across. But you just come off as someone who is a bulky and hateful.

LINK TO ORIGINAL AD

WANTED : A wedding photographer willing to take photos for free (we’re broke college kids) and collaborate with the bride to let her edit them. Dual credit will be given in the event the photos are used for a portfolio.

The wedding will be very small (less than 10 people) and will take place on December 10th, 2011 at 11:30 a.m.

If there is an interest in having a complete range of photos (getting ready to the ceremony, to some more posed photography after the ceremony) please let me know.

The photographer needs to have experience with a camera (aperture, shutter speed, etc) and taking quality photos, but not necessarily wedding photography.

Wow. Just wow. Did you notice that the wedding takes place TODAY? This ad was placed on December 4th. That means SIX days before their wedding, this couple decides to try and do something about their wedding photography.

I was alerted to this ridicuous request by a top-secret informant who felt it only fitting to try and educate this couple, although it will probably fall on dear ears.

Here is the email that was sent by the photographer to the couple. I will update later if a response is received.

I’m going to assume you’re young college students and not really thinking things through. I understand you’re broke, but still want to get married. That’s great. Praises to you.

But honestly…. the one single thing (besides your rings and marriage license) that you will have from your wedding in a year, in ten years, in fifty years, will be your wedding photographs. And you want someone to do them for free? Are you asking for someone to DJ for free? Cater for free? The state to donate your marriage license? Since you’re getting married on a Saturday, that alone is going to cost you $45. How about the rings? The dress? Flowers? Not only that, but you’re asking for hours and hours of coverage.

Do you not have respect for someone’s time to understand that they will spend the entire day on their feet, hauling around several pieces of equipment, dealing with the stress of keeping track of which photos have been taken, which ones haven’t, and listening to people tell them how to do their job the entire day. Yet, the only compensation you’re offering is “dual credit in the event the images are used for a portfolio.” Oh, and maybe something to eat at the reception. I’m going to guess that when you spend an entire day doing a job for someone else, you like to have some cash to go in your pocket. Something that helps to pay your bills at the end of the week. To add insult to injury, you’re asking for someone who has experience and can take quality images. Your photographer, even if they don’t have wedding experience, will have had to have some training in order to have that experience and to take those quality images. Again, you are showing a lot of disrespect by not offering to compensate them for their time.

One last thing to consider…. you don’t care if they have had wedding experience or not. I can tell you right now that taking photos at a wedding is an entire different world, no make that an entire different universe, from taking photos of kids or dogs or flowers or even “creative” self-portraits. Again… your wedding photos will be what you have to look back on about one of the most important days of your life. And you want to risk it by not even caring if the person has experience taking wedding photos.

You might as well buy a $50 digital point and shoot and give it to your neighbor’s kid. At least then you’ll have some “creative angles” to go with the out of focus, poorly exposed, badly cropped images you will likely get. I’m sure that you can just fix it photoshop later since you’re expecting to edit them anyway.

Good luck.

Since I’m not a baby or children photographer, I have hesitated to comment on this subject, but enough is enough.

Babies and children are precious, precious beings and we, as professional photographers have been entrusted with these tiny people by their parents to capture their important portraits as they come into the world and begin blossoming into childhood.

NEVER, in a million jillion years should we EVER place these tiny beings at risk.

There are some photographic fads out there of babies being placed in risky situations. I’ve seen a baby in a basket on a railroad track. Seriously? What the hell just possessed you to do that? This isn’t even artistic! Yes, it’s unusual, but so is eating a brillo pad for breakfast.

This photograph is an example of the kind of idiocy I have been seeing:

(C) Barefoot Photography by Tina Doane

Before anyone gets their panties in a wad about this photo being placed here, I give you Section 107 of the Copyright Law (title 17, US Code):

Section 107 contains a list of the various purposes for which the reproduction of a particular work may be considered fair, such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Section 107 also sets out four factors to be considered in determining whether or not a particular use is fair:

The purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes

OK, back to business. The above photo is wrong. It’s just wrong. Before you get your panties in yet another wad, this is NOT a composite. I have researched this and am satisfied that this was not done as a multiple composite image.

And here’s the really bad part – there ARE cool shots of babies out there (remember the baby hanging from a tree limb fad? oh, wait, that’s STILL a fad, no remembering involved) – and these shots ARE the result of composites, HOWEVER, sometimes newbie photographers (or seasoned photographers, for that matter) do not do any research at all and just blunder into a shoot like this with no prior planning and try to reproduce the shot as if it were not a composite.

So, we have tiny little beings being stuffed into glass containers, hung from tree limbs and propped up on their elbows till hell won’t have it.

Babies are NOT TOYS. I don’t care if you have a billion dollars in insurance policies, do not risk your tiny little clients any more. Have the integrity to turn down these kinds of requests if you cannot learn to do them safely or if your photoshop skills are not good enough to create composite works.

I imagine that this article will inspire hate mail. Have at it. If I can make one person stop and think and keep them from harming a baby, that’s good enough for me. Bite it.
